fun fabric fun time

hi all!

just thought i would pop in and show you this awesome shot of some fabric i am about to use for an apron for my awesome friend cat AKA silly skittles.  yep some of you may remember her – she is the one behind the skittles.  anyway, she has switched creative modes and began decorating cakes and let me just tell you she is AMAZING!  You can check out Sugar N’ Sweets and see her wonderful creations!  so i thought i would make her a super cool custom one-of-a-kind apron to decorate in and parade around in!  here is what i have to work with:

the polka dot and cupcake fabric will be the apron and the others are for Cricut appliques.  i recently finished reviewing an apron pattern book for Craft Critique (article to come soon on their website) and i just LOVE making them!  ours are Halloween 🙂  i can’t wait to get started on this next one – it is going to be so CUTE!

stay tuned – tomorrow cat and i have a special joint post for you – may become a regular thing with us who knows!

my cricut goes paperless…

hi all!

i hope your week has been off to a good start!  i had meant to have this posted this morning but we got a call from our next door neighbor to go to Loudoun Sports Bounce with another neighbor and all the kidlets.  we had not been before and it was FUN.  well for pez – i don’t get to actually play on it 😛  it is basically a warehouse with a bunch of giant inflatables to jump in, climb on, slide down – how cool is that??

then we tried to make a kid’s garden stepping stones from one of those kits ya know?  WOW did that not go well.  it hardened before i could get it mixed much less smoothed, handprinted and embedded with the fabulous gems that came with it.  i am thinking real cement would be easier.  hubby said he would help.

we also dropped off my entry into a local fiber crafts show and contest.  each person is given a fat quarter of fabric by our local quilt shop – Web Fabrics – the BEST fabric store EVER.  then we have to make something and some piece of that fabric has to appear in the project.  how fun right?!?!  so that is what i am going to show you today!

i decided to make a book bag for pezza:

**SQUEAL** – i just ADORE this fabric!  it is actually two different fabrics obviously.  i started by ironing ultra bond onto the back of the fabric so i could cut it on my Cricut.  I used the Songbird cartridge for the letter flowers and the bird on a branch.  i cut the name plate with my nesties (yep they cut fabric!)  i used Ashlyn for the lettering – i made a stencil using vinyl.

the bag is a plain canvas bag from Michaels – i think i paid $1 for it.  i started by stamping randomly with some Inkadinkado Stamps and VersaCraft ink – versacraft ROCKS for fabric stamping and is permanent after heat setting it with an iron or heat gun.  Next I ironed on my die cuts.  i cut them from paper first so i could space them and size them correctly – i know some folks would do this on DS or gypsy.  next i used some Viva Decor Pearl Pens to seal the edges f the fabric really well – in case i need to wash this bag it will be washable.  i did pezza’s name by putting my vinyl cut out onto the nesties fabric cut with contact paper and then smoothed on Viva Pearl black pen.  now my fave part – the little layered flowers.  i used some fabric and some AMAZING felt from papertrey inc.  i sewed the layers together by hand along with the button center.

Final touches – the bag came with AWFUL nylon straps.  i wanted to replce them.  then i melted one and the decision was made.  off came the nylon and on went the fabric straps!  i also add the matching ribbon around the top using ultra bond.

i liked this so much i am thinking about making a lady bug one!

ok i am off to play with crazy miss!

Cricut and fabric

SO i watched my first 2 episodes of Desperate Housewives that Drake gave me while i worked on the computer this morning – LOVIN’ it!  not sure why i never wtched it before – i think i initially thought it was one more in the slew of reality shows which i am totally not into.  anyway – GREAT GIFT!  one of the things i worked on was posting the first CRICUT challenge over on the magazine website – the prize up for grabs is the Sweet Treats cartridge or a $20 gift certificate!  So if you are a subscriber and have a Cricut be sure to check the website for the challenge!

i LOVE the project i am sharing today!  Every now and then Pezzy takes an afternoon class at the community center here.  This week she is going to a bumble bee and flowers class so i FINALLY FINALLY played around with fabric and my cricut *swoon*!!  oh the possibilities!!!!

say it with me now – AWWWWWWW hee eheee!!!

everything is cut from the Walk In My Garden cartridge – an oldie but goodie and one of my all time faves!

It is actually MUCH easier than i thought!  now first off the fabrics – the BEST place to go for fun applique fabrics is a quilt store – they have TONS of coordinating fabrics in themed sets – it’s like a pad of paper hee heee!  I am lucky enough to have a SUPERB one right here in town.  if you don’t have a good one you cna shop at mine online – >>WEB FABRICS<< – the owner is AMAZING and all of the ladies there are fantastic!  and the selection OH MY!!!!!  if you DO shop there be sure and let them know i sent you!

here are a few tips for you:

  1. get some Heat n Bond Ultra Iron on adhesive.  iron this onto the back of your fabrics – follow package directions – BEFORE cutting.  PEEL THE PAPER BACKING OFF BEFORE CUTTING
  2. use a new blade – this dulls your blade fast – you will want to be sure you have a back up blade or two on hand.  IF you find your blade is snagging, take it out and push the little top thingy that makes the blade stick out so you can check for lint and fuzz and blow it off.
  3. place your fabric adhesive side down
  4. i am not too sure how it would do trying to cut something too very small or intricate.
  5. Once your pieces are cut you just iron them on!

now my concern – i am a little iffy on how well they are going to stay stuck on to the shirt…i am not sure if there are other products out there that would keep the fabric stable enough to cut and have a better hold once ironed on.  the package warns NOT to try and sew through it – it is pretty thick.  the next one i might skip the shadow layer and outline the pieces with Viva Decor Pearl Pens since they are washable.  SO time will tell BUT:

she will definitely be ready for bumble bee class on wednesday!

now a few details on this shirt in particular – the dot trails for the bees and dots on the bee hive are Viva Pearl Pens.  The lettering needed to stand out more so i outllined lightly with a black copic (won’t wash out) but these bleed so be careful! you just need a light touch as you go around the edge.  i did not have black fabric so i cut the stripes out with the bodies in the yellow and then colored those with the copic also.  to give the wings some shimmer i painted them with Ice White Viva Pearl pen and a paintbrush.

ok i am outta here – got a truck to clean and a birthday cake to make for hubby!

ashleys gift close up 1

The gift set includes two parts – some goodies for Momma and some for Baby.  First up – Momma –  a card, a jar of quick n easy dinner – Layered Soup Mix – so Ash can have it easy one night, and a mini jar of a special Honeysuckle Bath Salt mix I whipped up so she can MAYBE get a little moment or two for herself.  The salts I make have a gentle scent and do WONDERS for smoothing your skin.  It is topped off with one of my fave crocheted flowers I made that has been lounging in my stash and the mini jar – an empty Flower Soft container!  I have about a zillion of these from making the little Flower Soft sampler kits and they are sized just right for Bath products so i will surely be tucking those into my Christmas Baskets I am going to put together this year!
