TIOT: a warm gift for cooler evenings

hi all!

well Pezza’s first day without Drake was a bit of a rough one.  but we survived!  drake made it home safe and sound so that’s a relief.  it’s so weird to be the worrying mom sending her kid back home – seems like yesterday i was the kid with the worrying mom KWIM?  it appears he is finally getting serious about getting into college and might even move back down here so i am keeping my fingers crossed on that one!  pezza would be THRILLED!

well i have been working my BUTT off on some great stuff for you all next week for the Blog Party sponsored by Viva Decor.  i can’t wait to show you what i have been working on!  i will have lots of FUN, easy projects and tips on how to use all of those AMAZING products we have been seeing from Viva Decor!  and the best part – a winner will be chosen EVERY DAY to win the products used in that day’s project!  You can purchase lots of Viva Decor products at Susana’s Custom Art & Card Design.  The party starts on Monday!

is the weather cooling off where you are? i know it is by me. Our challenge this week was to create a fall themed gift and so i thought a gift to warm someone up would be perfect!

i got the template for this cute little coffee cup from My Time Made Easy – i hadn’t used one of Lauren’s templates in quite awhile and they are ALWAYS fabulous! it came together very easily! i filled the cup with packs of Cocoa and a cute little matching bookmark.

The template comes with pieces to decorate the cup with. rather than just cut them from patterned paper i decided to do the paper designing myself with some truly awesome products Susana carries in the store by Dreamweaver – the Leaf Background brass stencil, Metallic Gold Embossing Paste, and several Metallic F/X mica powders in Eye of the Tiger, Ivy Garden and Kimono Red. this is a technique that looks very high tech but is actually super easy and pretty quick.

I started by putting a bit of repositionable adhesive on the back of my pieces to keep them still on my craft sheet.

Next i laid my brass stencil over the papers (i did 2 pieces at a time). Then i took a plastic paint spatula and gently smoothed the embossing paste over the stencil making sure to cover all of the open spaces. be careful not to let your stencil move and don’t overwork the paste or press to hard. Smooth of the excess and lift the stencil. while the paste is still WET i tapped on the mica powders. i took a small dry brush, dipped it into the powders individually, held it up over the embossing and tapped the brush so the powders fall down onto the wet paste. Leave the excess in place and set them aside to dry. Once dry use a large brush to brush off the excess powders. You are left with a gorgeous mottled shimmering touch to your embossed leaves – perfect for fall!

i made a bookmark to go with the cocoa – really what’s better in the winter than an evening with a cup of cocoa and a good book? i used one of the new Carmen Medlin stamps – First Signs of Fall. It was the perfect shape for a book mark. i colored her with copics. then i cut a big leaf again using my Cricut. I covered it with the same gold embossing paste and used the same technique with the mica powders.

i encourage you all to check out the Dreamweaver products. The stencils are beautiful, the embossing paste is very easy to use and the mica powders are gorgeous!

be sure to drop me a line if you like my little gift set! enjoy your day!!!

  1. Love your project, Marti! Those leaves are gorgeous!!! I’ll have to try that technique. You write such easy to follow instructions. I have been in love with the Carmen Medlin stamps since I first saw them. Thanks for sharing. Hugs, Sharon :o)

  2. Last Easter, I went for a hike by Hickory, NC. We found a spot with lots of mica laying on the ground. There used to be a mica mine in the hillside. I picked up a handful of little pieces of the mica to bring home to use on my projects. Did you know that the poineers used mica instead of glass in the windows and lanterns?

  3. I just love the leaves. The colors are so pretty. The stencils have really improved since I got one 8 yrs ago & the design just looks so dated now.
